Sensei Rhys Sandford
2nd Dan (Nidan)
In October 2006 at the age of 7, my Judo journey began with Kanazawa Judo Club at a little club in Stukeley Meadows, Huntingdon. At the time, the club was run by then Renshi Paddy (6th Dan, now Kyoshi 8th Dan) and then Sensei Scott (3rd Dan, now Renshi 4th Dan). As soon as I finished my first session, I knew I wanted to pursue the art of Judo further.
At the age of 10, after training for 3 years, I earned the grade 12th Mon, and thus my first junior grade, prompting Kyoshi Paddy to invite me to train at Huntingdon Medway Centre to further my knowledge and abilities as a Judoka.
By 2014, I had attended 3 competitions, several seminars and training courses, all of which aided me in the achievement of my Junior Shodan on May 17th. Shortly after, I attended the 13th annual Shochu Geiko International Seminar, where I won gold in my category. The following year in 2015, I attended the Ishin Ryu Junior Championships, where I gained my first national title and managed to retain this later in October at the 14th annual Shochu Geiko International Seminar.
Throughout my teens I continued to attend reginal, national and international competitions especially in Islington, London and training days earning qualifications in both teaching and refereeing Judo. I achieved my Shodan Ho on June 30th, 2018 and finally graded for my Shodan (1st Dan) on November 18th, 2019 in front of Kyoshi Paddy Swallow and all the rest of the dan grades, the hardest Grading I have ever been to.
